Professional Standards



The standards of ethical and professional standards of practice reflect a shared understanding among all educators at Nile Valley School of the importance and need of and for professional behaviour within the profession – one that is dedicated to the nurturing of the student as a whole individual. The standards serve as the foundation of the school’s ethos and they describe the professional beliefs and values that are unique to the teaching profession. They guide teachers in their professional judgement, decision making and conduct in their varied roles and relationships.

Ethical Standards

At Nile Valley School, care, respect, trust and integrity are the core ethics of teaching. More specifically:


  • Encompasses compassion, acceptance, and interest in developing students’ potential as learners.
  • Teachers are committed in their practice to nurturing the well-being of students and learning through serving as a positive role model and exercising appropriate professional judgement and empathy


  • Encompasses fairness, openness and honesty.
  • Teachers are committed to demonstrating trust in their relationships with students, parents, colleagues and members of the school community and the general public.


  • Encompasses trust and fairness.
  • Teachers demonstrate tolerance and are committed to honouring human dignity, emotional well-being and diversity through modelling respect for spiritual and cultural values, social justice, confidentiality, freedom, democracy and the environment.


  • Encompasses morality, honesty, and reliability.
  • Teachers are committed to consistently exercising integrity in fulfilling their professional duties and responsibilities.
These core ethical standards are embedded in Nile Valley School’s performance management appraisal process, the Teacher Performance Appraisal (TPA) that is used to assess professional practice standards and to ensure excellence in teaching practice through the following teaching competencies:

  • Leadership in Learning; and
  • Ongoing Professional Learning
These competencies describe the continuum of knowledge, skills and professional practices of Nile Valley School teachers.
Moreover, the standards provide teachers with a collective professional identify as all Nile Valley School educators will strive to be:
  • Caring role models and mentors committed to student success and the love of learning;
  • Ethical decision makers who demonstrate responsible and sound professional judgment at all times;
  • Critical reflective practitioners who consistently participate in a personal systematic cycle of review of his/her professional practice in an ongoing effort to enhance and refine his/her performance;
  • Collaborative team members and leaders in learning communities; and
  • Responsive practitioners to the needs of all learners and respectful of equity and diversity within Nile Valley School.


Nile Valley School teachers are committed and dedicated to providing their students with the best education possible. They are accountable for the overall success of students as learners and as individuals. As part of their professional teaching duties and responsibilities, teachers will:
  • Establish a safe and nurturing learning environment based on mutual respect;
  • Establish high and reasonable expectations for student achievement;
  • Demonstrate and model the attributes of good character;
  • Establish clear expectations for (routines, rules and hierarchy of logical consequences) for behaviour rooted in the attributes of good character and aligned with the school’s code of conduct for discipline;
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the physical, social and intellectual development of learners at different stages;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how student learn and programme appropriately so that all students can experience success;
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of curriculum;
  • Nurture students’ intellectual curiosity and promote a passion for life-long learning;
  • Acknowledge and celebrate student diversity;
  • Plan and deliver well-structured meaningful lessons to access and master the curriculum and learning expectations;
  • Reflect upon the effectiveness of teaching practices;
  • Assess accurately and consistently students’ academic achievement and progress through the using different assessment tools;
  • Communicate effectively and consistently with parents regarding students’ academic achievement and well-being;
  • Foster strong collegial relationships with students, parents, colleagues and members of the school community and public;
  • Contribute positively to the Nile Valley school community; and
  • Take responsibility for involvement in continuous professional development.

Personal and Professional Conduct

In the context of personal and professional conduct, Nile Valley School teachers are to demonstrate consistently high standards of personal and professional conduct at all times by upholding public trust in the profession. They will:
  • Establish, respect and maintain professional boundaries appropriate to the position;
  • Demonstrate respect for all school policies and procedures and fulfil all their professional duties and responsibilities;
  • Demonstrate respect for diversity and cultural sensitivity by upholding the laws and values of Sudan;
  • Demonstrate the ethical standards becoming of a teacher within the teaching profession;
  • Contribute to the ethos of the school and serve as an ambassador for Nile Valley School within the community;
  • Maintain high standards with respect to professional appearance and attendance and punctuality; and
  • Demonstrate tolerance and respect for the rights of others and not express personal beliefs that may influence the vulnerability of students.
