Basketball Season

This past Saturday, the Nile Valley School girls basketball team got their season kicked off by playing host to fellow league schools Unity High School (UHS) and the Khartoum American School (KAS). Joining them were two newcomers, the British Education School (BES) and General Science and English School (GSES). It was the first time for Nile Valley to meet either school in competition before. The 4th annual KISSK Classic is the 4th time that NVS has hosted this tournament to kick off the girl’s portion of the basketball season.
Nile Valley had 3 of the 9 teams competing in the tournament. All three teams placed in the top 5 of the tournament, with two of the NVS teams finishing 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. NVS won the winner’s bracket, but a strong effort by Unity earned them a victory over NVS-2 in the loser’s bracket championship and a trip back to the winner’s bracket to face off against NVS-1. After defeating Unity 6-0 the first time they played, NVS-1 ran out of energy and lost 3-5 to the first time champs.
Nile Valley won this tournament years 1 and 2. KICS won the tournament last year, defeating NVS in the championship, and Unity won this year’s tournament by also defeating NVS in the championship. Coach Olen was very proud of the work that his team has put in and how strong the girls look at the start of the season. After a rebuilding year last year, he believes the girls look poised to make a run at the high school girls championship. The season officially begins on Monday, Sept. 2nd, when the NVS high school boys and girls travel to face KAS.
